U.S. stocks rode reopening tailwinds to new all-time highs in 2021, overcoming multiple bouts of risk-off turbulence fueled by Covid-19 variant outbreaks, rising domestic labor costs, global supply-chain disruptions, and the U.S. Federal Reserve’s late-year pivot to a less accommodating tone. Beneath the index-level numbers, however, there was great volatility, dramatic rotations, and in the end significant performance divergence.
